Mombasa Governor Abdulsamad Shariff Nassir has reaffirmed the county’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships on ocean conservation and the blue economy.

He made the remarks while receiving Carl Decaluwé, Governor of the Province of West Flanders, Belgium, during a courtesy call on Wednesday, held ahead of the World Ocean Conference scheduled for June 2026.

The meeting highlighted the growing cooperation between Mombasa and West Flanders in marine science, sustainable ocean management, and blue economy development.

The leaders discussed opportunities to deepen collaboration in research, knowledge exchange, and practical interventions aimed at protecting marine ecosystems while promoting inclusive economic growth.

The 2026 conference will bring together global stakeholders to advance collective action on ocean health. It will be the first World Ocean Conference held on African soil.

The event will spotlight Africa’s leadership in ocean action. It will also showcase the coastal communities, biodiversity, and ecosystems of Kenya and East Africa.

Governor Nassir noted that the engagement underscored shared priorities between the two coastal regions, particularly in advancing innovation and sustainable ocean solutions.

“As we prepare to host the 2026 World Ocean Conference, Mombasa looks forward to deepening this partnership with West Flanders to advance joint research, innovation, and sustainable solutions for our oceans,” the Governor said.

Guided by the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future,” the conference will emphasize the essential role oceans play in shaping culture, communities, and livelihoods.

Ahead of the global conference, the county is positioning itself as a key regional hub for blue economy leadership.

The event will bring together the global community to protect shared ocean resources, preserve maritime heritage, and secure a thriving future for generations to come.
